4 of 5 Healthy Sweet Chai Mix August 19, 2015
Reviewer: Troy the Chai-Direct Chai Tasting Guy
With only 2 grams of sugar and 21 grams of protein per cup, you may be expecting Big Train Fit Frappe High Protein Mix to be a downright bland, unsweetened cup of chai that only bodybuilders and diabetics could enjoy. NOT! I found this to be, if anything, a little overly sweet to my aging taste buds. (Although, truth be told I find most of the sweetened mixes to be a little too much for my palate.)

So what is the secret of the sweetness? The answer is Erythitol, a natural sugar substitute that has numerous health benefits and 95% less calories than sugar. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erythritol.) A secondary sweetener, polydextrose also appears, which is a soluble fiber synthesized from dextrose (glucose) and 10% sorbitol and 1% citric acid. It has roughly 25% of the caloric value of sugar and has shown potential health benefits. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polydextrose.) So, it takes good AND is good for you. (Mom will like that!)

Now, on to the practical side of things… Taste. If you, like me, find the sweet chai cups a little too much, I have a recommendation here. Back off the ¼ cup of mix per 8 oz water to cut down the sweet factor. OK, but this also cuts back the chai factor, which, to my palate, may be a bit thin, relatively speaking. So I’d add a bit of a potent-but-unsweetened form of chai to add a little chai kick to it. My pick here to complete Fit Frappe would be Blue Lotus Chai – Rooibos Masala. It has massive chai spice punch in a very tiny package and zero sweeter. It also adds zero caffeine. And that is probably a good idea since Fit Frappe comes with about as large a caffeine dose as any chai out there: ¼ cup of mix (intended to made 8 oz of chai) contains approximately 75mg of caffeine, which is the same as a decently strong ½ cup of coffee, or about double the caffeine of a standard cup of black tea.

Finally, Big Train Fit Frappe is intended to be mixed with water only. The mix contains powdered milk derivative (Calcium caseinate is the first ingredient by weight), so it does indeed have a milky creaminess to some degree in water. However, my spoiled tastebuds like the real thing. So my perfect Fit Frappe is this: First, a 12 oz cup of hot chai is essential. Who drinks 8 oz? So I’d back off the mix by adding milk: ¼ cup mix in 8 oz water plus 4 oz milk. Then a quick dash of Blue Lotus Chai to make sure I know it’s really chai after all… Mmmmm. Perfect!
